“Becoming Better Humans”—How We Started Using VR and AI to Teach Human Skills

We first introduced the concept of using AI and virtual humans to teach human skills in 2019.

First released to the market in 2021, CoPilot Designer became a key piece of our vision to help people “Become Better Humans”—a concept we started incubating in 2018 and talking about publicly in 2019. We presented the ironic proposition that we could use AI-powered virtual humans to help real humans get better at skills such as critical thinking, empathy, and navigating difficult workplace conversations.

We realized these skills would be vital in the face of AI and other technologies transforming the workplace and our role as humans within the workforce.

Since then, we’ve spent the past four years using our platform to help many organizations and hundreds of thousands of people practice “human skills” in VR. This saw our platform’s first demo go viral, PwC prove its efficacy with results like 4x learning speed, and learners ranging from Fortune 500 employees to high school-age students benefit from immersive learning experiences.

These results have since been applied to corporate training use cases ranging from practicing customer conversations in the insurance industry to helping managers simulate giving performance feedback.

CoPilot Designer has played a critical role in our platform’s growth, as it solved a significant challenge in the XR learning ecosystem—lowering the barrier to entry for XR content creation.

“The final piece of the puzzle is Talespin. We’re not saying that no one was talking about soft skills before Talespin came along, but Talespin did a lot to keep “soft skills” and “VR” in the same breath. The company that uses AI to create VR social and emotional learning modules started really gaining steam in 2019, and hasn’t slowed down.” - AR Post, 2021

Now, everyone can create custom XR content for any use case they’d like—with no coding, animation, or technical skills needed, and lower costs than were previously possible.

Those capabilities have just gotten better in our latest release, as we bring our platform to your browser and set the stage for it to integrate with a host of exciting new technologies that will give our users super powers.

Today’s Platform Update: Introducing CoPilot Designer 3.0

These updates make creating XR content today faster and easier than ever, while setting the table for what’s to come.

Using AI to Create Immersive Learning Modules Today

With CoPilot Designer 3.0 now out in the wild helping people create XR learning content faster and easier, let’s talk about what immersive content creation looks like today.

The reason we were excited about CoPilot Designer in 2021 was the way it transformed XR content creation. Having created custom VR and AR applications since 2015, we knew how much time it took and how expensive it was—two factors that seriously limited the learning modality’s potential. Our goal at Talespin is to remove this barrier all together, while increasing the quality of learner experiences and the measurability of learning outcomes.

Decreasing Immersive Learning Content Creation Time

The introduction of CoPilot Designer (CPD) drastically reduced content creation costs and time. Integrating generative AI into our workflow has done so again.

Fast forward to today, and the pairing of no-code content creation tools and AI is poised to help creators take another significant step forward in content production efficiencies.

For years, we’ve invested in XR technology and content structures, standards, and processes that are built for this moment. Our platform is set on a path to contextualized large language models (LLMs), new models for skill measurement, and the responsible integration of AI into every aspect of work. Because of these investments and technical foundation, Talespin is years ahead in our platform development and vision.

Use cases that you can deploy today using AI tools to complement VR content creation workflows include:

  • Using generative AI writing tools to expedite the creation of learning module outlines, including drafting learning objectives and identifying the skills learners need to obtain to achieve learning objectives.
  • Using generative AI writing tools as a writing assistant while crafting branched narrative dialogue scripts for VR learning modules.
  • Using generative AI image creation tools to produce virtual human character assets for use in immersive learning modules, and to concept new virtual human characters, including detailed references for their roles, background stories, personas, and physical appearances.
  • Using generative AI image creation tools to produce the 3D environments that an immersive learning module will take place in, and to concept new 3D environments.

Time, Cost, Quality - Pick All Three

Previously, immersive learning content creation fit into the classic content creation conundrum: having to make tradeoffs picking between cost, time, and quality (AKA the “project management triangle,” or “good, fast, cheap” concept).

Now, with the combination of CoPilot Designer and Generative AI tools, we have collapsed that triangle, enabling you to realize the outsized results immersive learning delivers without having to make any trade offs on budget, content quality, or the time it takes to create content.

The “project management” triangle collapses when you combine the Talespin platform with Generative AI, giving immersive learning content creators significant gains in efficiency without sacrificing content quality.

Just as AI tools are helping content creators across industries focus more on creativity and less on production, the same is happening in immersive learning—and we are excited to have our platform be a part of it.

The ability to use Generative AI in the content planning and production process is already decreasing content creation time and costs, and we expect to see that adoption trend continue among our customers and partners.

Be on the lookout for more information as we plan to share further details on these learnings to help our community adopt AI in their VR content production processes.

Powering New Immersive Learning Experiences With AI Tomorrow

As new technology continues to change the role of human productivity in the workplace, the skills people need to fill our new roles are changing, too.

We started Talespin for this moment and have spent the last seven years building a platform to serve as a counterbalance to advancements in technology and workforce disruption—a platform designed to help people reskill and upskill in order to learn the capabilities that AI can’t compete with, and ultimately increase the value of human labor in the workforce.

We see generative AI complementing our platform, as it helps companies create immersive learning experiences faster and easier, and in turn elevates the innately human skills that their employees possess.

The Future of Generative AI and Immersive Learning Experiences

How generative AI complements immersive learning content creation today is clear.

How AI can be used to deliver new types of skills development experiences for humans in the near future is still taking shape. This is a trail we have been thinking about for years, and are excited to continue blazing.

As we evaluate our product roadmap, here are just a few of the future capabilities and use cases we are exploring:

  • Orchestrating LLMs, generative voices, and generative 3D world building to deliver immersive learning experiences that are created in real-time and adaptive.
  • Immersive learning content generated on the fly that is emotionally realistic and contextually relevant, with a focus on helping people hone their critical thinking, creativity, and human intelligence.
  • The ability to create immersive learning simulations where the speech from virtual human characters can be driven by a large language model (LLM) that is guided by the constraints provided by the business. This can also be mixed with more prescriptive immersive branched narratives for enterprise use cases ranging from onboarding to customer experience training simulations.
  • Delivering more open-ended VR roleplay conversations.
  • Leveraging custom LLMs specific to certain topics, use cases, and even specific organizations and their unique workforce learning needs.

Ensuring Trust Every Step of the Way

We are exploring these developments thoughtfully, with the enterprise in mind, and a focus on leveraging new AI tools in a manner that best supports employee skills development. We know this is a lot to take in, and we will be moving our roadmap forward with simple milestones, tangible ROI, and an approach that ensures trust along every step of the way.

Throughout the rest of 2023 we look forward to more AI tool updates and demos coming out, as well as sharing our own R&D efforts in these areas that will ultimately deliver even more value for our customers.
